Finely painted to depict White Tara, one of the three principal long-life deities, seated in lalitasana atop a lotus base, the pendant foot resting on a lotus blossom, while both hands hold the stems of lotus blossoms blooming at the shoulders. The deity is dressed in fine silks and brocades, framed by an aureole and radiant nimbus.Surrounding the central figures are 731 forms of Green Tara, each with one face and two hands, the right extended in the mudra of generosity and the left holding a lotus flower. With the right leg pendant in a relaxed manner and the left folded in, they are seated in rows on lotus flowers encircled by red and green spheres of light.Provenance: Collection of Norman and Dorothy Kohlhepp, Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Norman Kohlhepp (1892-1986), despite a distinguished career in metallurgy and military service, pursued a parallel path as an artist alongside his wife, fellow artist Dorothy Irene Smith Kohlhepp (1890-1964). The couple traveled widely and often exhibited together. Originally trained as a draftsman of mechanical systems, Kohlhepp turned to fine art in Paris, where he met Dorothy, founded the American Students and Artists Club, and studied at the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Both later studied under André Lhote, whose influence shaped their work for years. After returning to the United States, they settled in Louisville, became active in the local art community, and were regularly represented in exhibitions at the Speed Art Museum; Dorothy also served as president (1940-1941) and vice-president (1942-1947) of the Art Center Association School. The Speed Art Museum is the oldest, largest, and foremost museum of art in Kentucky, USA. The Speed houses ancient, classical, and modern art from around the world. Hattie Bishop Speed established the museum in memoriam of her husband James Breckenridge Speed, a prominent Louisville businessman, art collector, and philanthropist. Mark Walberg is a distinguished dealer and collector of Asian art, whose career spans more than half a century. He began collecting at the age of thirteen and, over the ensuing fifty-five years, established an international reputation through his work with major auction houses, as well as through consulting and appraisal services for some of the most respected figures in the field.Condition: Very good condition with wear, little fading to colors, creasing and folds, and little flaking to pigment.
