A GROUP OF TWO TERRACOTTA FUNERARY VESSELS AND A HUMAN FIGURE, PROBABLY BURA CULTUREWest Africa, Lower Niger Valley region. Both vessels with a distinctive spherical body rising to gently tapered, narrow necks: one shaped with two flanges and a broad concave mouth, the other decorated with a band of raised dots along the shoulders and terminating in a large, flared rim. The stele modeled with an oblong body supported on a short foot and surmounted by a small, highly stylized anthropomorphic head, marked by a prominent nose, full lips, and a subtle crest. The upper half of the surface decorated with diagonal impressed motifs.Provenance: The collection of Inge Bienenstein, Vienna, Austria, thence by descent within the family. Ingeborg Bienenstein (d. 2013) was the founder and director of Bienenstein Gallery, which she started in 1978 in Vienna, Austria. The gallery held several exhibitions each year, displaying fine antiques and works of art from Asia, Africa, and Oceania in context with modern art and design from Europe. This approach aimed at showcasing a universal language of art and the fact that art from all around the world can be connected in a meaningful way.Condition: Good condition with ancient surface wear, firing irregularities, few minute chips to rims, minor cracks, old repairs, all as expected.Weight: 4,643 g (total excl. stands), 4,755 (total incl. stands)Dimensions: Height 19.8 to 37.2 cm (excl. stands)With two associated braided wicker stands. (5)The Bura culture flourished between the third and thirteenth centuries AD in what is now southwestern Niger and parts of present-day Burkina Faso. Bura artistic production encompassed stylized anthropomorphic forms, zoomorphic imagery, and monumental funerary ceramics. The discovery of these works in the 1970s brought to light a highly sophisticated society distinguished by complex spiritual traditions, advanced ceramic practices, and extensive cultural influence across the Niger River Basin.Closely related ceramic traditions developed contemporaneously throughout the Middle Niger region, including the Inland Niger Delta around Djenné-Djenno. Archaeologists today understand Bura and Djenné material culture as part of a broader network of exchange linking communities across the Sahel through trade, migration, and shared artisanal knowledge. While regional distinctions certainly existed, many surviving ceramics from both traditions share common formal characteristics: hand-built construction, sculptural vessel forms, impressed geometric decoration, and surfaces evoking woven organic materials.Highly skilled female potters working at sites throughout the Niger River Basin produced a rich and varied corpus of fired ceramics from the first millennium AD onward, including domestic wares, funerary urns, storage vessels, and devotional objects. The present vessels exemplify these refined hand-modeled traditions of the Middle and Lower Niger region. Beyond their utilitarian function, the works are distinguished by the care devoted to their decorative surfaces. Impressed motifs, created through the repeated stamping of braided fibers onto the clay, imitate the texture and structure of woven basketry, underscoring the close relationship between ceramic and textile arts in the wider Sahelian world.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related terracotta human figure in the Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimar?es. Compare a related larger terracotta human figure, “possibly” Bura culture, 76.2 cm high, in the Birmingham Museum of Art.
