H:27cmW:14cm This lot is a black pottery water purification ewer of the Han Dynasty. Fired with fine pottery clay and polished jet-black through carburizing craft, it bears a heavy, smooth texture. The vessel has a wide flat dish base, a spherical belly decorated with multiple neat raised concentric ribs, and a short spout on one side for pouring water. Above sits a slender segmented neck with tiered layered mouth. The well-proportioned minimalist shape served as a ritual water container for Buddhist purification and literati hand-washing in ancient times. Fully intact with aged antique black patina, such surviving pieces are scarce.
