Lee Ufan, a Korean painter, was born in 1936 in the mountains of Gyeongnam, Korea, into a Confucian family and was deeply influenced by traditional Eastern thought from an early age. He studied poetry, calligraphy, and painting, and was particularly interested in the natural beauty of landscape painting and its profound implications, as well as the Chinese thought of Laozhuang. He was a professor at Tama Art University and is currently a visiting professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, and in 1997 was a visiting professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Today he lives and works in Japan and France.
