拍品描述 翻译
A BAULE WOOD FIGURE OF A MONKEY, 20TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Ivory Coast. The figure is carved seated on a chair, with a long cylindrical torso and short powerful legs, the arms held in front of the body, the large rounded head with protruding muzzle, broad grinning mouth exposing teeth and deeply carved eyes and nostrils. The figure is adorned with fiber and textile elements around the neck, shoulders and one wrist. Figures of this type are associated with Baule monkey spirit imagery, often referred to as gbekre , and were used in ritual contexts connected with protection, sacrifice, and the mediation of powerful bush spirits. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition with extensive wear and manufacturing irregularities. Tiny nicks, small chips, soiling, few age cracks, and traces of insect activity. Weight: 4.4 kg Dimensions: Height 57.5 cm So far removed from the refined and delicate artistic canon of Baule masks and statues, these ape-like statues, called gbekre, bear no resemblance to any other object in Baule culture. The names, practices, and beliefs associated with these “monkeys” were diverse, idiosyncratic, and, above all, secret. These figures were produced in far smaller numbers than other types of sculptures created by Baule artists. These frightening, often cup-bearers, which housed invisible forces – both malevolent and benevolent – served their community through diviners. Because of their ambivalent powers, these statues had to be worshipped regularly. An essential morphological feature of this statuary is the cup placed in the figure’s hands, intended to receive frequent offerings. With its classical designs and the great beauty of its creations, Baule art has captivated connoisseurs the world over. The Baule statuary is one of the art forms from Africa that is most highly regarded by Westerners; very early on, they started collecting remarkable exemplars. It was easily introduced on the Parisian market, due to the strong attraction it exerted on modern artists. Paul Guillaume also opted to highlight it when he showed eighteen pieces from Gabon and C?te d'Ivoire drawn from his own collection at 291 - Alfred Stieglitz' art gallery in New York. As a result, among the host of diverse productions from this, the greatest people of Cote d'Ivoire, sculptures are, by far, the most abundant in the museums. Literature comparison: Compare a related wood figure of a monkey, dated to the 20 th century, 71.1 cm high, in the Cornell University, object number 81.086.005. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie’s Paris, 21 November 2017, lot 74 Price: EUR 30,000 or approx. EUR 37,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: Baule monkey figure, C?te d'Ivoire Expert remark: Compare the related carving manner and subject. Note the size (47 cm).
