拍品描述 翻译
A LARGE EWE WOOD FEMALE ANCESTOR FIGURE, TOGO, 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Well carved, stands upright on two solid legs, with a rectangular torso and simplified arms projecting from the shoulders, the face with a long, narrow nose, incised eyes, and a linear mouth. The surface retains traces of wear and natural patina, attesting to its long use in ritual contexts. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, expected age cracks, signs of weathering, traces of insect activity. Weight: 23.3 kg Dimensions: Height 119.5 cm With an associated modern stand. (2) Fetish figures among the Ewe people of southern Togo occupy a central role in the spiritual and social life of the community, serving as intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds, embodying protective, divinatory, and ancestral powers. Ewe ritual practice distinguishes between figures representing individual spirits, collective guardians, and deities associated with fertility, morality, or social order, and these objects are frequently housed in household shrines or village temples where they mediate daily life and communal rites. Across the broader Gbe-speaking region, the Moba people of northern Togo and adjacent Burkina Faso employ analogous figures in their ritual systems, including objects that invoke protection, control of the environment, or intercession with ancestors. While stylistically the Moba and Ewe figures differ - the Moba favoring more elongated, abstracted forms and the Ewe emphasizing expressive faces and incised details - the underlying cultural logic is closely aligned: both groups use anthropomorphic carvings to channel spiritual efficacy and maintain societal equilibrium. Literature comparison: Compare a related smaller Ewe wood female figure, dated 19 th -20 th century, 61.6 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1976.26.2.
