拍品描述 翻译
A MOBA WOOD ANCESTOR FIGURE, SAKAB TCHITCHIRI, CIRCA 1900 OR EARLIER This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Togo. Boldly carved, with highly abstracted anthropomorphic features, presenting elongated arms hanging at the sides from a roughly rounded torso, rising to a pronounced head inclined forward, creating a marked hunch along the back. The wood exhibiting an attractive grain and a fine, naturally grown patina. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition, with expected wear, natural imperfections, such as splits and age cracks, traces of weathering and erosion, scattered losses, extensive scaling, and occasional remnants of pigments. Weight: 17.8 kg (total) Dimensions: Height 77.2 cm (excl. stand), 92.8 cm (incl. stand) With an associated stand. (2) Erected at the center of Moba villages in northern Togo, large sakab tchitchiri figures such as the present lot were set directly into the earth, where, over time, they gradually sank until they disappeared entirely. According to some elders, their placement echoed the burial of deceased chiefs, whose bodies were interred upright in vertical shafts. These highly stylized sculptures did not represent specific individuals, but rather evoked an ancestral principle: a pre-existing being, a collective clan ancestor, or even humanity itself as conceived by the Moba. In earlier times, they received offerings intended to assist hunters; with the increasing scarcity of game and the growing importance of agriculture, such offerings—millet flour mixed with water and poultry blood—came to be associated instead with the fertility of the fields and the success of the harvest. Moba art ranks among the most minimalist sculptural traditions in Africa, conveying complex spiritual concepts with an extraordinary economy of means. The corpus of Moba figures, whether carved in wood or forged in iron, is remarkably consistent, leaving little room for fanciful variation. The sculptor’s artistry is expressed above all in the choice of material, the grain and form of the wood, and the subtle proportions of the major elements, particularly the head. Moba woodcarvers are known as tikpierroa. Although carving is generally practiced by men and accessible to any male member of society, the carving of these figures is traditionally restricted to sons of diviners. Carvers use an adze, a specialized tool used primarily for woodcarving, in order to shape these ritual objects. The Moba , also known as the Bimoba, are an ethnic group primarily located in the northern regions of Ghana and Togo. They speak a Niger-Congo language and belong to the Gurma cultural and linguistic group. Moba society is organized in patrilineal clans, in which individuals trace descent through the male line to a common ancestor. Ancestral veneration occupies a central place in Moba belief systems, with particular emphasis placed on the original ancestor of each lineage. To facilitate contact with the ancestral realm, the Moba create sculpted figures intended to bring the living closer to their forebears. As a result, wooden figures play a significant role in Moba ritual practice.
