拍品描述 翻译
A RARE AND LARGE BIDJOGO POLYCHROME WOOD ‘MAN ASTRIDE A BOVINE HEAD’ SCEPTER FINIAL This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Guinea-Bissau, Bijagós Archipelago, 20 th century. Boldy carved in the form of a ram head, painted in vivid red, black, and white pigments, with almond-shaped eyes on either side, flanked by drooping ears, a prominent muzzle with a separately carved movable lower jaw, and two long, curved horns. A nude male figure sits atop the head, grasping one horn with the left hand while extending the right arm forward to maintain balance. His well-defined head bears stylized facial features, including almond-shaped eyes beneath a protruding forehead, a flattened nose, and full lips, all flanked by large ears, and surmounted by a finely modeled cranium. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Overall good condition with wear, traces of use, expected age cracks, old repairs, some elements slightly loose, little flaking to pigments, minute nicks, light surface scratches. Weight: 4.1 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 69.3 cm (excl. stand), 75.3 cm (incl. stand) With an associated modern stand. (2) The Bidjogo , also known as the Bijagó or Bissago, are an ethnic group inhabiting the Bijagós Archipelago off the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. They speak Bidjogo, a language belonging to the Atlantic branch of the Niger–Congo language family that occupies a distinctive position within this linguistic group owing to the long isolation of the Bijagós Archipelago. Traditional religion continues to play a central role in Bidjogo cultural life. Despite the expansion of Christianity during the early twentieth century, an animistic worldview has remained firmly established. This religious system centers on a creator deity and a complex network of spirits associated with natural features and inanimate objects. These spiritual entities occupy an important place in ritual practice, serving as guardians of the household, protectors against malevolent forces, and agents of healing. Ritual figures are placed in designated locations within the home and receive offerings and ritual attention. The principal focus of ceremonial life among the Bidjogo is the initiation of young men and the veneration of ancestors. In contrast to many societies in West Africa, where specialized sculptors produce ritual objects for the community, Bidjogo families traditionally carve their own masks and figures. This practice has encouraged the development of a highly individual artistic tradition that follows stylistic conventions only loosely. As a consequence, attribution often presents difficulties, and numerous works have historically been assigned to the neighboring Baga rather than correctly identified as Bidjogo. Literature comparison: Compare a related Bidjogo painted wood bovine mask, 49.5 cm long, sold at Sotheby’s London, 22 March 1982, lot 206, and now in the British Museum, registration number Af1983,08.1.
