A FINE AND LARGE BAULE WOOD ‘COLON’ FIGURE, EARLY 20TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Ivory Coast. Boldly carved and entirely lacquered in dark tones, depicted standing firmly on both legs, its arms hanging naturally at the sides, with the left hand resting against the hip while the right holds a small bottle. The nude body revealing the male genitalia and the elongated torso, which rises to a well-defined head, marked by large almond-shaped eyes with prominent pupils, framed by projecting ears, and surmounted by a distinctive crested headdress. Provenance: René David, Galerie Walu, Zurich, by 1999. Professor Gert Chesi, acquired from the above for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Galerie Walu is a Swiss family gallery devoted to traditional African art, particularly the cultures of West Africa, with roots going back to 1957. Its defining figure was René David (1928-2015), a traveler, dealer, and connoisseur whose repeated journeys to Mali, Cameroon, the Congo, C?te d’Ivoire, Ghana, and other regions shaped both the gallery’s collections and its reputation. Together with Denise David, he later established Galerie Walu on R?mistrasse in Zurich, where it became an important meeting place for collectors and scholars of African art, known for carefully selected works, rigorous documentation, and a strong commitment to cultural context. Their son, Jean David, continued the family business and further developed Galerie Walu’s role as a respected specialist gallery for African and tribal art. By the 1990s, Galerie Walu was widely recognized for its exhibitions, publications, and expertise in the field. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, expected age cracks, light flaking, small chips, shallow surface scratches, few light nicks. Weight: 4.9 kg Dimensions: Height 101.7 cm The Baule people from the Ivory Coast of West Africa are renowned for the exceptional quality of their sculpture, furniture, and other artistic traditions. Rooted in a rich cultural heritage, their works embody both remarkable craftsmanship and complex historical and spiritual meanings. Colon figures constitute a distinctive genre of wooden sculpture that emerged in West Africa during the colonial period, particularly among the Baule. The term ‘colon’, derived from the French word for ‘colonist’, refers to their depiction of European colonial officials, who are often identifiable by elements of Western attire, as exemplified by the distinctive headgear worn by the present figure, while simultaneously incorporating established representations of spiritual or otherworldly beings deeply embedded in Baule belief systems. Rather than functioning as literal portraits, they reflect the creative appropriation and reinterpretation of foreign visual forms within local artistic and cultural traditions. During the colonial era , such sculptures were displayed within Baule households as decorative objects or produced for sale to European collectors and visitors. See Susan M. Vogel, Baule: African Art, Western Eyes, 1997, p. 83. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams San Francisco, 5 May 2015, lot 129 Price: USD 10,000 or approx.
