拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, 1615-1868. Of yosegi-zukuri construction, finely carved standing in samabhanga atop a double lotus pedestal raised on a tiered cylindrical base, which is further adorned with lotus foliage and panels bearing shippo-patterned motifs. His hands are held in raigou-in mudra, welcoming the dead into his Pure Land. He is dressed in loosely draped monastic robes, open at the chest and falling in voluminous folds from the shoulders. The well modeled face with full fleshy contours conveys a serene meditative expression with heavy-lidded downcast eyes beneath gently arched eyebrows centered by an inlaid urna, above a broad nose and full lips, flanked by elongated, pendulous earlobes. The hair is neatly arranged in tight curls, surmounted by an inlaid nikkeishu (Jewel of Wisdom), covering the domed ushnisha. The figure is backed by a large boat-shaped kohai (mandorla), whose head is centered with a lotus blossom, while the remainder of the surface is richly decorated in high relief with large swirling clouds. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Good condition, with expected wear, small losses to the fingers and minor chips to other exposed areas, with associated old fills and scattered retouching, the inlaid urna on the forehead replaced, rubbing and flaking to the gilding and pigments, with some areas of repainting. Weight: 2.2 kg (total) Dimensions: Height 74.8 cm (total) The sculpture represents Amitabha , known in Japanese as Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of Infinite Light. Amitabha presides over the Western Pure Land, a transcendent realm of salvation to which all may gain access through sincere and devoted recitation of his name. This vision of redemption became central to the Jodo (Pure Land) school of Buddhism. Systematized in 1175 by the monk Honen, its emphasis on spiritual accessibility enabled this doctrine to spread widely across Japan, reaching diverse social and feudal strata. Often depicted within an elaborate mandorla, the boat-shaped halo symbolizes his role as a guide, leading sentient beings across the ocean of suffering that pervades the world. Literature comparison: Compare a related larger gilt-lacquered figure of Buddha Amida, Japan, Edo period, 17th-19th century, 172 cm high, in the Musée Georges-Labit, Toulouse, inventory number 92.8.5.
