拍品描述 翻译
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan. Of yosegi-zukuri construction, the Medicine Buddha finely carved seated in kekka fuza (dhyanasana) upon a large circular lotus pedestal raised on a tiered hexagonal base decorated with further lotus petals as well as foliate and floral designs carved in openwork. His right hand is raised in semui-in (abhaya mudra), while the left is lowered to hold a covered medicine flask. He is clad in loosely draped monastic robes, open at the chest and cascading in voluminous folds from the shoulders to gather gracefully around the crossed legs. The well-defined face, with full, fleshy contours, conveys a serene meditative expression, with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes beneath gently arched eyebrows, centered by an inlaid urna, above a broad nose and full lips framed by a delicately curling moustache, all flanked by elongated ears with pierced earlobes. The hair is neatly arranged in tight curls, surmounted by an inlaid nikkeishu (Jewel of Wisdom), covering the domed ushnisha. The figure is backed by a large boat-shaped kohai (mandorla), with a circular lotus blossom behind the head and a narrow aureole behind the body, while the remainder of the surface is richly decorated in high relief with large swirling clouds. Provenance: Professor Gert Chesi, acquired circa 1990-2015 for the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, and subsequently de-accessed. Gert Chesi (b. 1940) is an Austrian photographer, author, and art collector. In 1995, Chesi founded the Museum der V?lker (formerly Haus der V?lker, Museum für Kunst und Ethnographie), Schwaz, Tyrol, Austria, a museum of art and ethnography whose collection consists mainly of objects acquired during Chesi’s travels through Africa and Asia, most of which were assembled in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also authored several books on African voodoo and magic rituals, including ‘Voodoo. Afrikas geheime Macht’ (1987) and ‘Die letzten Afrikaner’ (1977). Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear, minor age cracks, a loss to the base, minor old repairs most notably to some lotus petals and the compressed section of the base. Occasional chips, surface scratches, and rubbing to the lacquer with associated minor touchups. Weight: 12.5 kg Dimensions: Height 108.5 cm Yakushi Nyorai in Sanskrit (Bhaisajyaguru) means 'master of medicine' and is associated with healing. He made twelve vows while he was bodhisattva. Two of them were mental and physical healing and when they were fulfilled he became a Buddha. Although Yakushi is also known for Beryl radiance and frequently depicted with blue skin in India and Tibet, in this painting his golden skin is a reflection of the Chinese standard and an example of the transmission of Buddhism from China to Japan through Korea. Introduced to Japan in the seventh century AD, Yakushi still has relevance in death memorials, such as the ‘Thirteen Buddha’ memorial where Yakushi is the deity of the forty-ninth day after death. Literature comparison: Compare a related smaller Edo-period gilt-lacquered wood figure of Amida Nyorai, the mandorla dated 1783 and the figure and pedestal “probably 17 th century”, 57 cm high, in the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, accession number EA1970.210. Compare a related gilt wood figure of Amida Nyorai dated to the 18 th century, 128.3 cm high, in the Denver Art Museum, accession number 1938.9A-C. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie’s Paris, 8 December 2021, lot 143 Price: EUR 325,000 or approx. EUR 399,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A rare and massive gilt-wood figure of Buddha Amitabha (Amida Nyorai) and stand, Japan, Edo period Expert remark: Compare the related modeling, manner of carving, and lacquer gilding, with similar positioning of the hands, treatment of the drapery, and decoration of the mandorla.
