Dimensions: 21 cm (8.27 inches) in diameter, 9 cm (3.54 inches) in height. A 12th-14th century Jin-Yuan dynasty Jun ware large straw hat bowl with two natural purple flame glaze spots inside. Condition and Provenance: This bowl features the classic straw hat shape of Jin-Yuan dynasty Jun ware, with an everted rim, a sloping body, and a low, wide, heart-shaped foot. The glaze at the rim naturally thins, forming an irregular amber edge, adorned with small, original firing spots. The entire bowl is covered with a thick, milky-white lake-blue glaze, its surface covered with fine, natural crackles, radiating a soft, rustic luster rather than a glaring artificial one. Inside, there are two beautiful natural rose-purple flame glaze spots, arranged vertically in a weeping willow shape. The purple, deep red, and blue hues intertwine and blend seamlessly, their boundaries blurred, forming a unified whole entirely from the natural flow of copper oxide within the kiln, without any artificial modification. The bowl's base is a large expanse of unglazed, coarse yellow clay, dense in texture, with natural kiln rust surrounding the foot rim. A clear trace of hand-carved spiral marks is visible at the center of the bottom. The bowl is intact, without any minor cracks, hidden fissures, chips, dents, repair marks, overglaze repairs, or modern acid polishing. Only a few minor surface abrasions on the rim are the result of thousands of years of ancient use; the original burial patina and aged layers are also well preserved. This Jun ware bowl was originally consigned for auction by a historic antique ceramics gallery in Hong Kong and entered the pre-Ming dynasty ceramics collection of a private collector in California in 2026. Hong Kong, California, New York, Vancouver, and Toronto are core global trading centers for Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasty Chinese antiquities. Description: This Jin-Yuan dynasty Jun ware sky-blue glazed straw hat bowl, decorated with double purple flames, is an outstanding example of Northern Jun ware. Jun ware production began in the Northern Song Dynasty and flourished during the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. It is renowned for its unique high-temperature copper flame firing technique, which creates a distinctive purple flame pattern on the blue glaze, making it one of the most coveted collectibles among medieval Chinese ceramics collectors worldwide. The straw hat-shaped bowl has a wide mouth and slopes downwards, narrowing into a graceful, flowing design. Firing a large-diameter straw hat bowl in ancient kilns was an extremely challenging task; high-temperature firing often led to deformation of the body, sinking of the bottom, and kiln cracking. Therefore, well-preserved large Jun ware pieces are extremely rare, and their collectible value is higher than that of ordinary round-bellied Jun ware bowls. A thick, milky-white and sky-blue glaze covers both the inside and outside, flowing naturally downwards. Some glaze has chipped away at the rim during high-temperature firing, revealing a light brown earthenware edge—a natural characteristic of Jin and Yuan Dynasty Jun ware firing, not artificial coloring or aging. Two natural firing treatments—eggplant purple, pink, and lake blue glazes—interpenetrate and blend, creating a rich sense of layering. Each type of firing pattern is a random combination of factors such as kiln temperature, kiln atmosphere, and copper oxide ratio, so no two Jun ware pieces have exactly the same firing pattern, giving them an irreplaceable natural artistic charm. Fine, evenly distributed crackles cover the entire body, a natural aging characteristic caused by the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients between the body and glaze. The cracks of varying depths throughout the piece form reliable dating markers. The unglazed foot rim exposes coarse-grained clay covered with natural rust from kiln firing. The hand-carved spiral marks on the bottom perfectly match the standard mold technique for Jin and Yuan dynasty Jun ware. Jun ware bowls with two complete natural firing patterns are rarer than those with a single pattern, possessing higher aesthetic value and serving as decorative pieces, interior decorations, and specimens for academic ceramic research. This bowl retains its original excavated state, without any modern cleaning, polishing, or restoration. Its body, glaze color, crackle patterns, firing patterns, and mold technique are all completely consistent with the dating standards for Jin and Yuan dynasty Jun ware. It is highly favored by antique ceramic collectors in North America and Southeast Asia, possessing enduring aesthetic appeal and reliable long-term asset preservation and appreciation potential.
