Dimensions: A famille rose porcelain pillow with figures, 11.5 cm (4.53 inches) long and 8.5 cm (3.35 inches) high; a famille rose snuff bottle with plum blossoms, 8.5 cm (3.35 inches) high; a famille rose round snuff bottle with pine and crane motifs, 9 cm (3.54 inches) high; a famille rose flat snuff bottle with double handles featuring a child and fish; a famille rose round flat snuff bottle with peony motifs; and a famille rose eight-treasure ointment box, 6.7 cm (2.64 inches) in diameter and 5 cm (1.97 inches) high. A complete set of famille rose literati porcelain from the mid-to-late 19th century, during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. Condition and Provenance: All six pieces are original, without any missing or later-added parts. The porcelain body is dense and fine, covered with a soft milky white glaze, and has developed a natural, aged patina due to long-term storage. There are only slight signs of aging; no fine cracks, hidden fissures, missing pieces, or edge damage. The famille rose enamels are rich, saturated, and evenly applied. All figures, flowers, and auspicious motifs retain intact color layers without significant fading or wear. All marks, including vermilion seals, vermilion regular script, and underglaze blue marks, are clear and complete. This porcelain pillow is a genuine antique, showing no signs of polishing, acid washing, or forgery. The openwork carving on the top of the pillow is intact, the snuff bottle lid fits perfectly to the base, and all original porcelain stoppers for the snuff bottles are in perfect condition. This set of famille rose scholar porcelain from the Tongzhi period initially circulated in an antique gallery in Los Angeles and was acquired in 2024 by a private collector of Qing dynasty porcelain in California, USA. California, New York, and London are the three major centers for the global trade of Ming and Qing dynasty antique porcelain. Description: This complete set of famille rose scholar porcelain dates back to the Tongzhi period of the Qing dynasty and includes a porcelain pillow, four uniquely shaped porcelain snuff bottles, and an auspicious ointment box. Such well-preserved sets of Tongzhi scholar porcelain are extremely rare on the global antique market and are highly sought after by collectors of Qing dynasty porcelain in North America. Each piece of porcelain is made from high-quality late Qing dynasty white porcelain clay, glazed with a soft pale blue glaze, and decorated with hand-painted themes using classic famille rose enamel techniques. The brushstrokes are delicate and realistic, the colors rich and layered, blending auspicious folk symbolism with traditional literati aesthetics. This rectangular porcelain pillow depicts a lively water scene on the side, with fishermen boating under weeping willows; the lake water is clearly layered, and the boats and figures are lifelike. A small inscription in vermilion ink adorns the upper corner. The bottom of the pillow is stamped with a vermilion seal, inscribed "Made in the Tongzhi Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty." The pillow's openwork top served as a cooling measure in summer, making it an essential stationery item for ancient scholars' studies. The first snuff bottle resembles a small plum vase, decorated with mythical beast patterns, and stamped with a vermilion inscription in regular script, "Made in the Tongzhi Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty." The cylindrical snuff bottle is decorated with pine trees, red plum blossoms, and cranes; the cranes symbolize longevity, and the bottom is stamped with a two-character underglaze blue mark, "Playing with Jade." The double-eared flat snuff bottle depicts a playful scene of boys holding carp, symbolizing prosperity and good health year after year. This gourd-shaped flat snuff bottle is decorated entirely with blooming peonies, symbolizing wealth and glory, and bears a vermilion mark on the bottom. The round ink box consists of a lid and a base, decorated with the Eight Auspicious Symbols on the outside, and bears a vermilion reign mark on the bottom. The tightly fitting lid was used to hold ink for calligraphy and painting, an essential item for traditional literati. The famille rose porcelain from the Tongzhi period inherited the folk decorative characteristics of late Qing dynasty porcelain, making extensive use of auspicious symbolic patterns, adhering to standardized glaze and clay techniques, and employing official base marks, combining decorative beauty, practical function, and auspicious symbolism. These six pieces complement each other, forming a complete set of scholar's study collections. Having survived for over a century, the glazes are vibrant, the marks are clear, and there are no signs of repair or damage. This set of porcelain perfectly recreates the scene of Qing Dynasty literati's study during the Tongzhi period. It has great research value for the late Qing Dynasty famille rose porcelain technique and folk auspicious decorative patterns. At the same time, it is a rare complete set of antique porcelain treasures in overseas private collections and has extremely high investment potential.
