A RARE AND IMPORTANT 'KINRANDE' DOUBLE-GOURD VASE, HULU PING, JIAJING MARK AND PERIOD

Expert’s note: It is very rare to find Kinrande examples with reign marks such as the present vase. Evidently, a limited number of vessels of this decorative style were probably made for the Ming Court rather than for the export market. In Japan, porcelain decorated in gold is affectionately referred to using the textile term ‘gold brocade’ (kinrande).
This magnificent vase is one of the most impressive of the group, and even more so for the exceptionally well-preserved gilding. On many Kinrande wares, the period’s gilding techniques eventually resulted in the gold decoration flaking off over time, and well-preserved examples like the present lot are known mostly in Japanese collections. but many of these works have been extremely well-preserved in Japan. This is likely thanks to them being treasured and passed down by tea masters and wealthy merchants since the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573-1603). For example, fragments of this type of porcelain have been excavated from the site of Manju-ji Temple (Oita City), a family temple of the ōtomo clan, which was one of the most powerful feudal families on the southern island of Kyūshū.

China, 1522-1566. Superbly potted and richly decorated in gilt as well as iron-red and turquoise-green enamel, the bulbs each centered by four evenly space roundels enclosing shou characters above and lotus blossoms surrounded by leafy tendrils below, against brocade diapered grounds interspersed with floral and auspicious designs, framed by ornate bands of foliate lappets above the foot, key-fret between classic scroll and overlapping petals at the waist, and stiff leaves above further key-fret encircling the neck. The white recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Ming Jiajing nianzhi and of the period.

Provenance: Hans ?str?m (label to base), Stockholm, before 1965. A private collection in Germany, acquired from the above and thence by descent. Hans ?str?m (1879-1964) was a Swedish engineer turned art dealer and a respected authority on Chinese porcelain. After early work with Asea in Sweden and Otis Elevator Co. in Yonkers, New York, he returned to Stockholm and entered the art trade, first with Sigge Bj?rck before founding his own business specializing in Oriental art and antiques. ?str?m supplied important works to Swedish institutions including the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, the Nationalmuseum, and the Museum of Ethnography. He was also a member of the influential Swedish ‘China Club’ (Kinaklubben), whose members included King Gustaf VI Adolf, Carl Kempe, Richard Hultmark, and Anders Hellstr?m, several of whom acquired Chinese works from him.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities including dark spots. Expected rubbing and minor losses to gilt, the enamels especially well preserved. Overall, a Ming porcelain vase in such condition must be considered extremely rare.

Weight: 608 g
Dimensions: Height 20.2 cm

Kinrande decoration became popular during the Jiajing period (1522-66) and wares decorated in the kinrande style were extensively produced. Kinrande, a Japanese term for gold brocade, refers to textiles woven through with gold thread creating a luxurious golden pattern on a colored ground. The technique of gold decoration on porcelain was not an innovation of the Ming dynasty, however; some rare porcelains from the Ding kilns of Hebei were in the Song dynasty already embellished with gold.
