A LANGYAO BALUSTER VASE, GUANYIN ZUN, QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD

Expert’s note: The present lot’s magnificent glaze and elegant form, sometimes referred to as a ‘Guanyin vase’, exemplify the skill of the Chinese potters under Lang Tingji. Under his leadership, imperial potters embarked on a mission to rediscover the lost formula of the early Ming period and perfected the creation of deep and even copper-red glazes. This copper glaze turns red after being fired in a reducing or oxygen-deprived atmosphere. It sometimes drips down the vessel during firing, creating drops around the foot. It is incredibly hard to achieve, with layers of clear and copper-rich glazes allowing for depths of color, as clearly evidenced by the present lot.

China, 1662-1722. Superbly potted, the baluster body rising from a spreading foot over a high rounded shoulder to a short neck with flared rim. Covered with a rich, translucent, and finely crackled glaze of a brilliant strawberry-red tone, attractively thinning at the neck to raspberry and white, the interior and base glazed white.

Provenance: From a private collection in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The base with an old label inscribed ‘#824 Rare […] Vase. Kang Hsi’.
Condition: Superb condition with minimal wear and manufacturing irregularities including a firing crack to the base and slightly smoothened areas above the foot due to the uneven glaze dripping along the foot rim which is expected from this type of ware. An old microscopic chip to the foot which may be inherent to the manufacture as well.

Weight: 1,996 g
Dimensions: Height 31.5 cm

The term langyao (lang ware), derives its name from Lang Tingji, supervisor of the official kilns at Jingdezhen between 1705-1712, who is credited with the revival of monochrome glazes and particularly copper-red glazes. Although copper-red was used successfully in the Ming dynasty, particularly in the Xuande period, the copper-red monochrome glazes seen in the Qing dynasty became even more refined and were of an exceptionally even and vibrant tone.
