AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, FINELY CARVED, AND CELADON-GLAZED IMPERIAL ‘CLOUD SCROLL’ BOWL, YONGZHENG MARK AND PERIOD

China, 1722-1735. Sturdily potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short foot to a flared rim, the exterior finely carved with a frieze of interlocking S-form vines terminating in a cloud-scroll, covered overall with a brilliant pale celadon glaze, attractively pooling in the recesses, and thinning to a paler hue in the raised sections and to an elegant ivory-white at the rims.

The base with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi within a double circle and of the period.

Provenance: Collection of Henri Maux, acquired while on mission in China between 1945 and 1949, thence by direct descent to his granddaughter. Henri Maux (1901-1950) was a graduate of the école Polytechnique and a member of the Corps des Ponts et Chaussées (French Corps of Bridges and Roads Engineers). He spent the first ten years of his career in Cambodia and Vietnam and later worked in China between 1937 and 1939 as a technical adviser, specializing in infrastructure projects, particularly roads and railways, as part of a League of Nations mission supporting the Chinese government. His rigorous work and dedication earned him the Order of Jade, awarded in 1941 by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 1947 and 1949, he returned to China to lead economic and diplomatic missions on behalf of France and later the United Nations. Following his premature death in a plane crash while returning from an official mission, he was posthumously awarded the Légion d’ Honneur in recognition of his service. A four-volume biography of Henri Maux was later published by his daughter Antoinette Robert-Maux.
Condition: Perfect condition with only minor wear and minimal firing irregularities.

Weight: 1,020 g
Dimensions: Diameter 23 cm

This superb bowl, with its subtle decoration covered in beautiful celadon glaze, is among the finest Yongzheng mark and period vessels made in the Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. It belongs to a special group of celadon-glazed bowls, all of this form, but with varying designs of the central band, made on the order of the Qing Court catering to the Emperor's sophisticated taste and fondness for elegant monochrome wares.

Literature comparison:
Compare a near identical celadon glazed bowl with similar arabesques, with a Yongzheng mark and of the period, 20.6 cm diameter, in the Kyoto National Museum, museum number GK587. Compare a closely related celadon-glazed bowl decorated with a floral band, Yongzheng mark and period, 20.3 cm diameter, illustrated by Marchant on their website, inventory number M4703.
