A CARVED AND LOBED DINGYAO ‘LOTUS’ DISH, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

The dish has angled sides rising from a broad base, supported on a short foot ring, the lobed mouth rim characteristically unglazed, skillfully incised and combed on the interior with a lotus flowering from long stems, covered in a warm ivory glaze with areas of pooling to the base.

Provenance: Christie’s London, 7 November 2006, lot 146 (label to base), sold for GBP 9,600 or approx. EUR 19,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). C. C. Teng & Co. The storage box with a label inscribed in Chinese, ‘carved floral dish from the Ding kiln, Northern Song dynasty’. C. C. Teng (Teng Chen-ching) is a prominent Taiwanese dealer and connoisseur of Chinese art who founded C. C. Teng & Co. in Taipei in 1982. Renowned particularly for his expertise in Chinese ceramics, he has also handled jades, bronzes, Buddhist sculpture, furniture, and other works of art, earning a distinguished reputation among collectors and fellow dealers for his exacting eye, discretion, and scholarship. Over the course of his career, Teng has assisted in the formation of important private and institutional collections, including acquisitions by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, and served as an adviser to the celebrated Alan Chuang collection of imperial Chinese porcelain.
Condition: Superb condition with minor wear, firing irregularities, traces of use, and a minuscule chip to the rim.

Weight: 232.1 g
Dimensions: Diameter 19.1 cm

With a padded silk storage box. (2)

Ding wares, produced in Quyang, Hebei province, rank among the Five Great Wares of the Song dynasty and represent one of the most celebrated ceramic traditions of the period. This finely carved dish, decorated with a lotus motif, exemplifies the restrained elegance and refined craftsmanship for which Ding wares is renowned. Early examples consisted primarily of small utilitarian vessels, such as dishes and bowls, which were initially left undecorated or enhanced with simple hand-carved designs. The wares were often fired sitting upside down like the present lot, with their weight resting on their rim. This strategy served to spread the weight of the object and to guard against any malformation of their thinly potted bodies during the firing. Because of contact between the rim and the ground of the saggar, the rims were often left unglazed, and many were later covered with metal fittings.
