A FINE LONGQUAN CELADON MELON-FORM TEAPOT, SOUTHERN SONG-YUAN DYNASTY

China, 1127-1368. Elegantly potted in the form of a lobed melon, the globular body divided into vertical ribs rising from a petal-form foot, fitted with a domed cover surmounted by a stem and a neatly applied loop finial, the latter intended to secure the cover to the handle.
Set to one side with a slender tapering spout and to the other with a curved handle, the vessel is covered overall in a lustrous celadon glaze of soft sea-green tone, darkening attractively in the recesses and along the lobed grooves.

Provenance: E & J Frankel Ltd., New York, 1997. The Betty Eisler Collection, New York, acquired from the above and thence by descent. A copy of the original signed invoice from E & J Frankel, dated 1 December 1997, addressed to Betty Eisler, attributing the present lot to the Yue kilns and dating it to the Jin dynasty, stating a purchase price for the present lot of USD 3,750 or approx. EUR 7,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. E & J Frankel was a major New York gallery specializing in Asian Art since 1967. Run by Edith (1939-2012) and Joel Frankel (1937-2018), it was one of the oldest galleries in the United States focusing exclusively on Asian art. Leaders in their field, the Frankels traveled the world in search of Asian art treasures and educated the general public about their shared passion. Their gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City became a local institution, best known for its regular schedule of innovative thematic exhibitions, and frequently visited by the biggest names in the field, such as Eskenazi, Ellsworth, Junkunc, and the Alsdorfs. Betty Ellen Eisler (1926-2023) was a proud-and-loud lifetime New Yorker and longtime fashion merchandising executive. After attending the Tobe-Coburn School for Fashion Careers, she worked for 35 years as a national buyer and merchandise manager. After she retired in 1989, she helped her cousin Harold Gottesman with his Manhattan Mini Storage business, where she developed and ran the collection process. She was an avid collector of antique Chinese ceramics and loved to travel. Pieces from her collection are now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Condition: Very good condition with minimal wear and manufacturing irregularities including kiln grit. Minuscule nibbling and a small crack to the foot.

Weight: 148 g
Dimensions: Height 9 cm, Length 9.7 cm

Expert’s note: The present lot belongs to a group of melon-shaped vessels, which occupy an important place within East Asian celadon traditions, their lobed bodies translating the natural form of gourds, melons, and fruit into elegant ceramic design. Similar melon-shaped ewers like the present lot were also produced in Korea during the Goryeo dynasty, reflecting the broader exchange of ceramic forms, glaze technologies, and courtly taste across East Asia. While Goryeo potters absorbed much from Chinese celadon traditions, they developed a distinct aesthetic of their own, often favoring refined proportions, luminous bluish-green glazes, and, in some cases, inlaid decoration. Compare a related Korean melon-shaped ewer, dated to Goryeo dynasty, 19.7 cm high, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, object number 南購瓷000073N000000000.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Longquan celadon glazed lobed ewer, dated Southern Song dynasty, 11 cm high, unearthed in Siqiancun site, QIngpu district in 1990, now in the Shanghai Museum.

Auction result comparison:
