The first is a large bowl decorated with underglaze blue panels with figures in famille rose, interspersed with flower sprays, the interior with a further flower spray encircled by a honeycomb band to the rim. The second is a large blue and white bowl finely decorated in pencil style with peony, chrysanthemum and magnolia below a trellis band with floral cartouches; the third is a blue and white bowl decorated with a river landscape.
The famille rose bowl: 10 cm. high 23.2 cm. diam.
The ?floral? bowl: 10.5 cm. high x 25 cm. diam.
The ?landscape? bowl: 8.5 cm. high x 19 cm. diam.
Catalogue notes:
The pieces from the Nanking Cargo, like the 'landscape' bowl in the current lot, were from a ship belonging to the Dutch East India Company (VOC) called the Geldermalsen which sunk on its way back to Europe in 1752. The ship was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and the contents sold in an iconic auction at Christie's Amsterdam in 1986.
Condition: The famille rose bowl: there are four cracks to the rim (the longest 9.5 cm.).
The ?floral? bowl: the bowl has been broken into two and restuck, with an associated restored section to the rim (approx. 2 cm.), and some further cracks to the body.
The ?landscape? bowl: there are two hairlines to the rim (approx. 5 cm.).
