AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A MAN SLEEPING ON A LARGE SCROLL
Stained ivory netsukeJapan19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The ivory stained and bearing a good colour. The man, presumably a poet or painter, has fallen asleep during his work on the giant scroll. Perhaps he is also dreaming of the beautiful contents of his scroll – his expression certainly gives this impression. Good, compact composition, amusing size contrast between the man and his scroll; himotoshi on the underside.HEIGHT 1.9 CM, WIDTH 3.5 CMCondition: Good condition with minor age cracks and nicksProvenance: Austrian private collection
