German, most likely from the Bernheimer Castle, Bavaria, dated 1840. A remarkable and adorable pottery desk accessory! Glazed brown pottery in the form of a standing lion, head turned to the left, tongue extended, ring through its nose with links of pottery chain attached. In the top center of the lion's back is a small circular removable well and another removable well with strainer. Our guess is this is an inkwell of some form. On the side of the lion is a name - "Duiugen" and the date 1840. Size: 10" L x 9" H (25.4 cm x 22.9 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Paul & Louise Bernheimer collection, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA.
