Ca. early 20th Century Rattanakosin Meditation Buddha. The Buddha is seated on a large pedestal. Typical of the period. The Buddha is seated in the Dhyana mudr? or 'Meditation Position'. The hands in the Dhyana Mudra, the hand gesture that promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. In the hands the Buddha holds an alms bowl, a gesture of charity and compassion. He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head that symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
