Description: Bronze, Tibet, 16th century, H: 13 cm Buddha Shakyamuni on double lotus base. The right hand is calling the earth to witness, bhumispharsha mudra, the left hand in meditation gesture. This mudra was shown by Shakyamuni right after his enlightenment under the bodhi tree and warded off demon king Mara. His eyes are downcast and he has a benign smile, a dot symbolizing the Third eye is on his forehead. His hair is made of thick curls, and his ushnisha is topped with a lotus bud finial. The border of his robe is decorated with a geometrical pattern. A portion of the garment is arranged over the left shoulder. Interestingly, we have three references to the vajra in this depiction. In front of him lies a vajra, a weapon used as ritual object, looking as if almost sunken into the seat. Also Shakyamuni is seated in what is called the vajra position in Tibetan Buddhism. Bodhgaya, the place of Shakyamunis enlightenment, is also called Vajrasana, or Diamond Throne, in Mahayana Buddhism. Therefor it points out the exact time and location of Buddhas bodhi, or enlightenment. On the base is the Visvavajra symbol, also double or crossed vajra. It is often found on the base of statues that protect and keep prayers or relics inside.
