A BRONZE ALTAR WITH THE JAIN DIVINITY TIRTHANKARA
Yellow bronze
Western India, c. 15th century
A tirthankara, or jina, seated in a fully meditative position under a baldachin. Multi-tiered pedestal with decorative openwork and multiple accompanying figures strung together vertically on the arch-shaped background. On the back is an inscription, probably with – as is typical – a dating. The figure of the naked jina is delicately executed, deep patina and somewhat worn down due to cultic “grasping”.
