A RARE KONDH TRIBAL BRONZE OF A WARRIOR ON HORSEBACK
A RARE KONDH TRIBAL BRONZE OF A WARRIOR ON HORSEBACK
Copper bronze
Eastern India, Kondh Tribe, late 19th – early 20th century
The warrior is seated on the horse with a weapon over his shoulder and his other hand holding the reigns of the animal. The depiction of the horse is rather unusual - elongated face and large ‘button eyes’, particular attention also has been given to the spiky mane. The feet do not have any supports attached to them, meaning that it was made as a single piece, and not for a group display, which is coherent with the artistic quality of the piece.
