Auspicious Zitan Box, Hand carved Zitan hardwood Box with archaic ruyi and authentic patterning in Qing Dynasty. A rectangular construction bisected in the midplane to form the intersection between the lid and container. Centered upon the lid is Longevity "Shou", the symbol of longevity surrounded by intertwining leafy tendrils which support budding Lotus flowers, interspersed by scrolling ruyi, vines and foliage. The decorative ‘ruyi’ a wish for success without any obstacles, according to wishes, signifies good wishes for future prosperity, It is often used as a decorative motif in embroidery and hardwood lattices. Good fortune may have come from the Buddhist tradition and came to symbolize wealth and power. Amongst the vines, there can be found a pair of fish which is a symbol of a multitude and gives this box a captivating appearance. There is a slight glimmer of light that reflects off the polished surface. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this box a captivating appearance.
