Chinese Qing Dynasty Kangxi Doucai porcelain cup. Finely potted with straight opening, curved side, raised on foot ring. The exterior hand painted in detail with Doucai design depicted elder in various pursuit precious Lingzhi on the tree, in a colorful scene. Lingzhi is known as the fungus of immortality and is considered by Daoist mystics to be nourishment for immortals (Xian). Lingzhi is also a symbol of longevity. It's believed that Lingzhi grows in the dwelling of the Immortals and that whoever consumed the hallowed fungus achieved divinity. The design is well-proportioned, the clay fine and exquisite, the glaze smooth with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous. Doucai means soft colors which fit together which is evident in this harmoniously painted bowl. The artistry is a combination of underglazed blue outlines and enamels added on top of the fired glaze, within the outlines.
