To sit alongside the robust stainless steel version of its famed pilot’s watch, Rolex also made luxurious 18k yellow gold variations of the GMT-Master. The yellow gold GMT-Master 16758 was first introduced in 1981, and only remained in production for a relatively short time until it was discontinued in 1988. Contrasting with the warm gold tones of the case, bracelet, and hands, this ref. 16758 features a black dial and a matching black rotating bezel. The use of the 24-hour marked bezel in conjunction with the 24-hour hand allows users to simultaneously reference a second time zone. Although the steel counterpart of the 16758 was fitted with an acrylic crystal, Rolex opted for modern scratch-resistant sapphire for the crystal of the yellow gold version. A glamorous take on one of Rolex’s most famous tool watches, this full-gold vintage GMT-Master 16758 is an excellent an luxury-oriented example of Rolex’s iconic pilot’s watch.
This ref. 16758 GMT-Master has a case with a serial number engraving that corresponds to an estimated production date of 1981. The original tritium dial and handset are in superb condition, and the luminous material on them has started to develop a very slight warm patina. The watch and bracelet are in excellent overall condition and appear to be entirely unpolished, which is reflected in the slight patina that can be found on the gold case of the watch. With the exception of a few slight blemishes on the case, bezel insert, and bracelet, this timepiece is free from all signs of wear.
