AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE VASE, FANG GU
China, 18th-19th century. The four sides decorated with archaistic motifs, altogether revealing four taotie masks, all above a neatly cast leiwen ground, the sides with raised flanges.
Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Popov in Novi Sad, Kingdom of Serbia, acquired between 1900-1920. A copy of an old black and white photo, dating to early 1930s, with the collector’s cabinet, and the present vessel (turned upside down) within, is accompanying this lot.
Condition: Extensive patina and old wear, the tip of one flange lost.
