AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE CENSER, FANGDING
China, 19th century. Of rectangular section, supported on four legs, decorated with six Chinese characters above a leiwen ground, the edges with raised flanges, below the key fret rim supporting two looped handles, the lid pierced with lotus scrolls and a Buddhist lion serving as handle.
Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Popov in Novi Sad, Kingdom of Serbia, acquired between 1900-1920. A copy of an old black and white photo, dating to early 1930s, with the collector’s cabinet, and the present vessel within, is accompanying this lot.
Condition: Extensive patina and old wear, small dents and losses, two legs and the lion re-attached.
