Description:
A JADE CARVING OF A CAMEL, MING
China, 1368-1644. The reclining camel is naturalistically carved with its well-defined legs tucked neatly under its body, its head turned backwards towards its finely incised tail, the stone mottled in dark-brown, iron-red and celadon hues.
Provenance: French private collection. By repute acquired in the local trade in southern France ca. 20 years ago.
Condition: The suspension-piercings at the mouth are possibly a later addition. Besides that, very good condition with some wear and traces of use. Superb natural patina!
Weight: 83.6 grams.
Dimensions: Length 6.5 cm
Note the skillful incision work at the mane and the tail.
Auction result comparison: Compare with a related jade camel sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong on October 5th, 2011, in Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, lot 2140.
