A DEHUA BUDDHIST TRIPOD CENSER, KANGXI
China, 1662-1722. The vessel standing on three Buddhist conch shells as its feet. The cylindric, waisted body with four horizontal ribs in high relief, overall covered with an unctuous white glaze.
Provenance: From a private collection in Scotland.
Condition: Good condition. Three shallow small chips, one to lip and two to foot rim. Scattered firing flaws.

The Buddhist conch shell is an emblem of power, authority and sovereignty whose blast is believed to banish evil spirits, avert natural disasters, and scare away poisonous creatures. It is used in Buddhism to call together religious assemblies. During the actual practice of rituals, it is used both as a musical instrument and as a container for holy water.
