AN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND CELADON JAR, KANGXI
China, 1662-1722. Robustly potted, of globular form, the body finely painted with two quatrefoil cartouches each painted in inky tones of cobalt with scenes from Romance of the Western Chamber, reserved against a dense celadon glaze.
Provenance: From the private collection of Marion Gaffié, inherited from her father Henri Gaffié, from Nice, France, who was a close friend of Picasso, Dufy, Utrillo and Vlaminck, and a notable art dealer and auctioneer on the French Riviera between the wars. A copy of a letter by Marion Gaffié, confirming the provenance, is accompanying this lot.
Condition: Excellent condition with two minuscule nibbles to foot rim and some old wear and minor surface scratching. Old brown staining to neck.

Finely carved hardwood cover with depiction of bamboo, plum and peony in high relief as well as two neatly incised key fret borders. Six-character apocryphal Chenghua mark painted within a double circle in cobalt blue to the recessed base.
