Description:
A LARGE BISCUIT FIGURE OF LI TIEGUAI, KANGXI
China, 1662-1722. The immortal standing with one leg raised on a crutch and holding a double-gourd vase in his left hand, the facial features finely modelled with bulging eyes and a curly moustache and beard.
Provenance: Old English private estate. Christie’s London, Interiors, December 13th, 2011,
lot 531 (dated 18th-19th century). Private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with only minor wear and some firing flaws and kiln grit, two minuscule chips to the tips of the small black clasps that hold the immortal’s hairband.

Vividly painted in crisp green, yellow, aubergine and black enamels wearing a simple black robe decorated with plum blossoms slightly revealing his rotund stomach, supported on a square pedestal base pierced to the front and back. The canopy draped above the base bears an unusual landscape painting on the backside.
