Description:
A HEXAGONAL FAMILLE VERTE VASE, QING
China, 18th-19th century. The base with an artemisia leaf mark. Painted with a continuous scene of figures in a wooded landscape above a diaper band, the gently flaring neck decorated with a scene of fishermen by a river, with a band of key fret and floral designs to the shoulder.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Reverend Margaret Johnston (deceased 2018). Old collector’s label to base inscribed ‘Sotheby’s 2.4.82’ and ‘18th – 19th’.
Condition: Fine condition with some wear and traces of use, three surface chips to edges, minor nibbling around the foot, few firing flaws.
Weight: 4.5 kilograms
Dimensions: Height 50.5 cm (without base)
Hexagonal Famille Verte vases bearing the artemisia leaf mark are rare. While the opulent borders are more common during the mid-late Qing dynasty, the quality of enameling, the crisp brushstrokes, the deep green and the fine yet intense iron red rather point towards a late Kangxi period piece. Further evidence for an early date is the heavy pottery and the wavy, thickly glazed white background.
Fitted old hardwood base. (2)
