Description:
A GILT-BRONZE GANKYIL RITUAL BOWL
Tibet, 13th – 14th Century. Finely worked with a central medallion bearing the “wheel of joy” composed of three swirling and interconnected blades, within a chrysanthemum lappet circle in high relief and an incised key fret border.
Provenance: British private collection. Old collector’s inscription to base finely painted in black lacquer: “No 182 HOXMO TIBET”
Condition: Excellent condition with wear and traces of extensive use as expected from a metalwork from this period. Very slightly warped.
Weight: 256.1 grams
Dimensions: 16.5 cm
This unusual bowl combines various stylistic and technical aspects. While the scalloped petal frieze evolves out of Roman and Central Asian prototypes, the Gankyil medallion is a distinctly Tibetan element. The vessel is a repoussé-work from a massive copper-bronze sheet and bears both fine incision work and a thick layer of superb fire-gilding indicating its importance at ritual ceremonies of the period.
Auction result comparison: Compare with an earlier silver repoussé bowl of similar size and with a related chrysanthemum lappet circle, sold at Christies, New York, on March 25th, 2004, in INDIAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART INCLUDING INDIAN PAINTINGS, lot 31.
