KAPALA WITH COVER AND STAND
Tibet, 19th century. A fine ensemble, increasingly difficult to find.
Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany.
Condition: Wear, traces of use, minor losses and repairs. Some of the inlaid stones lost. Verdigris. Fine patina, especially to the skull.

The triangular stand made of brass repoussé and finely incised with flaming borders and heads of deities. The domed cover cast of massive bronze and neatly incised with deities and lanca characters on a scrolling ground, surmounted by a vajra finial, inlaid with turquoises. The kapala itself made from a skull, possibly human, inlaid with turquoises and coral, the inner covered with silvered metal.
