Japan. 18th/19th c. T?ju (T?y? II). Gold, silver and iroe-takamaki-e and mura-nashiji on fundame ground with inlays of aogai. A standing crane (tanch?zuru) with outstretched wings and surrounded by three karako, one of them offers him a bowl with seeds. On the other side, another karako and an elderly man with fan, while five butterflies flutter around them. The motif is a parody of the Noh play 'Sh?j?'. Four-part. Height 8.8cm. Sign.: T?ju & ka?.
