"The original Valentine pattern was a design created by Percy Brett, copied onto Chinese porcelain as a special presentation service made for Commodore George Anson in 1743.The Pattern is dedicated to love and was originally given to Commodore Anson on his circumnavigation of the world in 1743 – one of the most arduous voyages in the history of sea adventures. He harboured at Canton, where he and his men were instrumental in saving the city from a fire which would otherwise have destroyed it. In recognition, a porcelain service – in the 'Valentine Pattern' was commissioned for Anson, depicting items drawn from the sketches of his resident artist on that voyage."
