Bellissima copia ottocentesca dell’originale del Durer datato 1496. Poco dopo il ritorno dal suo viaggio in Italia, Durer si accinse ad eseguire questa rappresentazione del suo santo prediletto; lo rappresenta nel deserto, una iconografia rara per il nord Europa che generalmente preferiva rappresentare il santo nella sua cella intento alla traduzione della Bibbia in volgare.Il San Gerolamo penitente è evidentemente di origine italiana; Durer, all’apice dell’entusiasmo per il “moderno” e il drammatico, lo rappresentò con un impianto scenico similare al Figliol Prodigo, cioè inserendo il santo inginocchiato leggermente fuori centro e contornandolo con un paesaggio romantico, evidentemente risultato di attenti studi dal vero.L’iconografia specifica di questa tavola è da ricondurre ai quattro anni in cui San Gerolamo visse nel deserto. Beautiful nineteenth-century copy of Durer's original dated 1496.Shortly after returning from his trip to Italy, Durer set about performing this representation of his beloved saint; he represents him in the desert, a rare iconography for northern Europe that generally preferred to represent the saint in his cell intent on translating the Bible into the vernacular. The penitent St. Jerome is evidently of Italian origin; Durer, at the height of his enthusiasm for the "modern" and the dramatic, represented him with a scenic structure similar to the Prodigal Son, that is, by inserting the kneeling saint slightly off-center and surrounding him with a romantic landscape, evidently the result of careful studies from life. The specific iconography of this table can be traced back to the four years in which St. Jerome lived in the desert.
