Ancient Seas, ca. 2 million years ago. A beautiful example of a fossilized tooth from one of the ancient seas' most ferocious hunters - the Megalodon. Though many of the original serrations along the tooth edges are worn, their textures can still be felt; they would have been incredibly sharp while the animal was still alive. Dozens of vertical striations along the upper enamel as well as the brown, grey, and black coloration to the lower enamel are two additional results of the fossilization process, and the root exhibits several stable, age-commensurate fissures. Megalodon (Carcharodon megalodon, literally "big tooth"), thought to have become extinct 1.6 million years ago, is the largest known member of the shark family. Prior to 1666, when naturalist Nicolaus Steno studied shark teeth and realized the error, people believed that these teeth were moon rocks or dragon's tongues.
