Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl/Kwagiulth) people, ca. 1980s CE, carved by Louis Joseph (Quatsino, British Columbia, active later 20th century). A stunning, huge, hand-carved cedar mask titled "Wren & Kingfisher", featuring a transformative human/wren face as the main part of the mask with deepset eyes and a curved nose/mouth that resembles a beak. This mask is green around the eyes and cheeks, with black, red, and white details as well as carved relief forms. Atop the high forehead, carved from separate pieces of wood and inset so that they can move freely, are the wings, neck, and head of a kingfisher which is red, white, black, and blue aside from around its eyes - these are encircled in the same green as on the mask below it. The kingfisher's head angles upward and a dramatic crest rises from the top of its head. Size: 13.5" W x 22.5" H (34.3 cm x 57.2 cm); 28" H (71.1 cm) on included custom stand.Louis Joseph lives in Quatsino, British Columbia and is a member of the famous Joseph family of Kwakwaka'wakw carvers.
