Northwest Coast, Haida Gwai (Queen Charlotte Island), ca. early to mid 20th century CE. Finely carved from cedar wood, an anthropomorphic mask boldly painted in a palette of red, green, and black hues, characteristic of Haida carvings, that contrasts nicely with the natural color of the wood. The expressive visage is comprised of openwork eyes surrounded by concentric black circles and green sunken eye beds, a protruding nose with openwork nostrils, an open mouth with thick red lips and delineated upper and lower teeth, tab-like ears, black leaf-shaped face tattoos or face paintings adorning the cheeks, thick black brows, and a black scalloped fringe of bangs. The Haida have traditionally used masks to represent forest spirits in secret society dances - and like their Tsimshian neighbors, the Haida have also used masks during potlatch performances to represent the spirits among their ancestors. A wonderful example! Size: 10.5" L x 7.75" W (26.7 cm x 19.7 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
