North America, American Colonies, signed Major John Darby - 17 Regt - dated 1758 (French and Indian War period). An antique scrimshaw powder horn inscribed "City of PHILEDELPHIA" (spelled incorrectly - how charming) and features a meticulously incised cityscape of Philadelphia including vernacular edifices as well as steepled churches and buildings in the Neoclassical style below, as well as ships and a windmill on the opposite side. Inscribed along the periphery of the wide end is "Major John Darby - 17 Regt - 1758" indicating that this powderhorn was likely used by a soldier of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Size: 10.5" L x 2.75" W at widest (26.7 cm x 7 cm)Powder horns, made from from cattle or oxen horns, were a convenient way to store and carry gunpowder. A horn like this was watertight and resistant to decay. To create one, the inner material of the horn was removed by boiling it in water. Soldiers oftentimes wished to customize their powderhorns with scrimshaw to pass the time. Engravings typically included names, dates, maps, slogans, plants, animals, rhymes, ships, and forts. If a horn was inherited from a family member or friend, the new owner would usually add their own dates and names to the original carvings. The consignor found a letter at the archives of the Royal Leicester Museum pertaining to Darby, a photocopy of which will be provided with this powderhorn. He states, "This is a copy of the official document signed by Major General Monckton promoting John Darby to Lieutenant Governor of Martinique in 1762, four years after the powderhorn was dated. I tracked this down at the archives of the Royal Leicester Museum, where the historical documents of the 17th foot are located as the ranks were primarily from Leicester."
