Description A painted plaster bust of William Pitt the Younger after Joseph Nollekens (British 1737-1823), possibly first half 19th century, portrayed togate, inscribed PITT to the rear, 72cm high The present bust portrays William Pitt, who served as Prime Minister during the reign of King George III, including during the Napoleonic Wars. After Pitt's death, London-born sculptor Joseph Nollekens RA won the commission for a full length commemorative statue, to be placed at the Senate House of the University of Cambridge. When this commission proved popular, the sculptor produced over 70 busts of Pitt in marble.
