Otto Djaya was born in Rangkasbitung in 1916. He begun to paint at the Persagi studio during the Dutch colonial period. His elder brother Agus Djaya was at that time chairman of this first Indonesian Painters Union. After the end of World War II, he spent a period of study in Amsterdam, intensely travelling through all Europe. He participated to many exhibitions all over the world, and in Indonesia too, the last one held in Jakarta in 2016 to celebrate the 100th anniversary from his birth.
