A Chinese sancai porcelain jar dating to the 17th century. The jar is decorated with a flower border at the top and a banana leaf border at the bottom; the body features mystical sea creatures. Dimensions are: 12 1/2 in. tall X 12 in. wide; 31.6 cm tall X 30.5 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Hair line crack in the rim, minor age wear and abrasions. Provenance: From a private collector in Northern California. A similar sancai jar with sea monsters and 'eight Buddhist emblems' decoration can be found in the Palace Museum, Beijing (fig. 1).
