Born the son and grandson of artists who worked in Chinese ceramic styles, Kawase began his training at age eighteen and was soon experimenting with ancient iron-oxide glazes. The undulating lobes and subtly modulated finishes seen on the present vase are hallmarks of his unmistakable individual style; this is one of a group of pieces he named Jincho ("Penguin") in celebration of the thin stoneware body and soft glaze that recalls the bird's soft and downy chest.
