Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th centuryA tortoiseshell mounted folding fan consisting of a double-paper leaf sprinkled with kirikane, each side painted in ink and colour, one showing butterfly hovering over flowering shrubs of camellia, the other with three lobed panels, each enclosing different seasonal bird-and-flower scenes, both signed Sakai Doitsu with a red seal; with black-lacquered sticks and tortoiseshell guards lacquered in gold takamaki-e with a small butterfly flitting over autumnal plants of ominaeshi (valerian). 33cm x 56cm (13in x 22in).
