An inlaid lacquer suzuribako (writing box)
Edo period (1615-1868), 19th/19th centuryThe rounded rectangular box with lobed corners, set on a raised foot and decorated on the cover with a poem in silver takamaki-e on a dark brown ground, the sides decorated with interlocking floral lozenges in mother-of-pearl inlays, the interior with an overall design of fish leaping from rolling waves in iridescent shell inlays, fitted with a brass water dropper formed as a dancer's cap, and a rectangular inkstone; the rims brass, indistinctly signed on the underside with two inlaid-shell seals 11 x 9 x 1 7/8in (27 x 23 x 5cm)
